Children under 5
Traveling with little ones? Great news! Kids under 5 ride for free when they're with a fare-paying adult. If the train's busy and all seats are taken, they might need to sit on your lap.
Children aged 5 to 15
Children aged 5 to 15 get a 50% discount on a full adult ticket. If you're travelling as a family, you can get further discounts with a Family & Friends Railcard or our Family Travelcard – check out the details below.
If your child looks older than 16, it's a good idea to have them carry proof of age, like a Child Rate Photocard. You can get a free photocard at any staffed station with a passport-sized photo.
Railcards for travelling with children or young adults
Family & Friends Railcard
If you're travelling with children aged 5-15, we recommend you get a Family & Friends Railcard. It offers 1/3 off adult fares and 60% off most child fares.
16–17 Saver Railcard
If your child is aged 16 or 17, the 16-17 Saver Railcard is perfect for them. For just £30, teenagers can enjoy 50% off most train fares. It is valid for one year or until their 18th birthday, whichever comes first.
16–25 Railcard
For young adults aged 16-25, there's the 16-25 Railcard! Get 1/3 off fares right up to the day before their 24th birthday.
How to book child train tickets
Adding children to your booking is easy!
- Search online or download our app.
- Enter your departure, arrival station and travel dates.
- Select the 'Add' passenger button and add the child to your booking.
- Don't forget to add your Railcard, if you have one. Hit the search button
- Book - enjoy the added convenience of no booking fees.
