At London Northwestern Railway (LNR), our recruitment process is designed to find people who share our commitment to safety and delivering brilliant customer experiences on the railway.
To make things simple, we’ve split the process into two clear paths: one for roles where safety is at the heart of the job, and one for our supporting roles.

Non-safety critical application process
This pathway is for roles that support our railway through customer service or office‑based work, such as our Booking Office Assistants, Retail Travel Advisors, and Head Office teams.
1. Start your application
Begin online by completing a short application form. Share as much detail as you can about your skills and experience to give yourself the best chance of success.
2. Pass our initial application review
Our recruitment team will carefully read through your application to check if your skills match what we’re looking for, and we’ll let you know if you’ve been shortlisted for the next stage of our hiring process.
3. Attend an interview
Depending on the role, this could be an in‑person or video interview. Interviews are your opportunity to show us who you are, share your experiences, and see if we’re the right fit for you. We’ll also ask role‑specific competency questions, so this is your chance to stand out from the crowd!
For Graduate Programme applicants, this stage includes an in‑person assessment centre before the interview. You’ll meet our teams, take part in group exercises, and learn more about life at LNR before sitting down with our hiring managers.
4. Accept your job offer and onboard with us
If you’re successful, we’ll send you an electronic job offer along with all the onboarding essentials you’ll need to officially join the LNR family. Congratulations!
Safety‑critical application process
Our safety‑critical roles at LNR, including Train Drivers, Conductors, and Train Dispatchers, require a more detailed recruitment process to ensure we maintain the highest standards of safety and care for our customers and colleagues.
Note that for safety‑critical roles, the application process can take up to 12 months from application through to onboarding. Training may then require an additional 18 months. Because of the importance of the training and its fixed schedule, candidates must be able to fully commit to the first 6 months with no scheduled annual leave.
1. Apply online
Kickstart your application through our careers portal by answering a few initial questions.
2. Pass our screening checks
Our recruitment team will verify your eligibility, qualifications, and right‑to‑work documentation before progressing you to the next stage of our hiring process.
3. Complete role‑specific assessments
Our assessments are tailored to each safety‑critical role, giving you the chance to show off the skills that matter most in keeping our railway safe and reliable. For Train Drivers, this will take the form of driver assessments overseen by our national rail assessors.
4. Attend an interview
You’ll meet with a hiring manager to discuss your skills and experience, and answer competency‑based questions linked to real scenarios you’ll face at work. Some roles may involve more than one interview stage, including one‑way video interviews you can complete at a time that works best for you.
5. Pass our medical and fitness checks
These checks are essential for all safety‑critical roles, covering eyesight, hearing, drug and alcohol testing, and general health assessments. Only candidates who pass these checks can progress to the final stage of our recruitment process.
6. Job offer and onboarding
Congratulations! If you’re successful, we’ll send you an electronic job offer and begin the onboarding process so you’re ready for your first day at LNR.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between safety-critical and non-safety critical roles?
Safety‑critical roles directly impact passenger and staff safety, so the application process includes extra steps such as assessments and enhanced medical checks. These roles include Train Drivers, Platform Dispatchers, and Shunters in our Train Maintenance teams.
Non‑safety critical roles follow a shorter application process focused on customer service and teamwork skills, including our Booking Office Assistants and Retail Travel Advisors.
